Abstract

State Tax Assessor John LaFaver says the tax relief package given to Van Baalen Pacific Corp. to keep it from moving its Rockland distribution center out of state was a way to make the tax bill more proportionate to the company's presence in the Maine. Van Baalen in 1990 moved all clothing production to Southeast Asia, but didn't ask for a change in income tax status until the expansion question rose. Details.
