Abstract

The federal government this year made available $2 million in loans to help Maine farmers get into the cranberry business, but wetland regulations kept half the amount from being used. Federal rules say the cranberry loans cannot be used on any projects that would affect wetlands, which is where most cranberries grow. The state's cranberry harvest might reach 4,000 barrels this year, and at $50 a barrel and 150 barrels per acre cranberries have the potential to be a lucrative industry for Maine farmers.
