Abstract

Hunting guides in Maine can legally begin baiting bear stands on August 1, and the bear season opens on September 1. Guides will hang sweets or meat scraps high enough to keep the bait out of reach of coyotes or racoons, and use a cover scent to mask human odor. Many observers feel that conditioning bears to feed under a stand and then shooting them is less than sporting, and the issue is only one of the disputes in the bear-hunting world. Others involve hunting with dogs and territoriality concerns. Details.
