Abstract

The federal Environmental Protection Agency in November 1992 informed Maine that its program to get the state in line with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act was understaffed and underfunded, and said it would take the program over if changes weren't made. The state Legislature approved fees to supplement state and federal money for water inspection, and many Mainers are unhappy with those fees. Public water systems, including wells with at least 15 connections or any well that supplies more than 25 people during 60 days during the year, are subject to the fees. Details.
