Abstract
Rebecca Gerber, 41, of Waterville, was hired by Colby College's Music Department in 1985, and in December 1991 was denied tenure at the school. Gerber said the denial was due to her gender, while Colby officials say she wasn't good enough. The American Association of University Women's Legal Advocacy Fund has made Gerber's case one of only 25 that it has underwritten in the past 13 years. Last June, U.S. District Court Gene Carter ordered Colby to hand over files on 50 previous tenure decisions, the first time a Maine college has been forced to open its tenure process to close legal scrutiny.
