Local voters defeated a proposed landfill north of Houlton by a nearly 3-to-1 margin, despite eight years of preliminary work by the Southern Aroostook Solid Waste Disposal District. Opposition to the 135-acre landfill in Hammond Plantation focused on possible contamination of B. Stream and the eventual cost of the project. Details.
