Abstract

Last May, Restore: The North Woods, an environmental group based in Concord, Massachusetts, proposed the creation of a Maine Woods National Park in northwestern Maine. The park, at 3.2 million acres, would be the largest in the lower 48 states, and would be within a day's drive of a third of the nation's population. The proposal calls for purchasing the area from willing sellers, at an estimated cost of between $500 million and $1 billion. Details.
