Abstract

A description of the Nigerian Independence Day Celebration, held on October 1 and organized by the Nigerians in Maine Community in cooperation with Oga Suya, a Portland-based Nigerian catering company. The celebration honors Nigeria's independence from the United Kingdom and was the first such celebration held in the state of Maine. The article provides a brief overview of the concerns of the Nigerian diaspora, chiefly focusing on security issues in Nigeria, ranging from political corruption to Boko Haram. Despite their concerns, celebrants were hopeful about the upcoming presidential elections in Nigeria.
