Abstract

Odelle Bowman is the director of a non-profit children's theater program called A Company of Girls. Last year a group of mostly low-income girls, ranging in age from 11 to 14, put on a performance of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" at Portland's East End Children's Workshop. Bowman believes the girls can gain respect themselves and others by attending professional plays and by putting on their own performances.
