Abstract

"City" piece on a proposal by Mark Chase, director of the Alliance for Transportation Choice, to add bike lanes on the shoulders of many Portland streets as soon as 2000. Chase has presented his idea to the Portland City Council, which approved his request to apply for a $64,000 grant from the Maine Department of Transportation. The money would be used to create a system of cycle lanes on secondary roads that would connect urban neighborhoods to parks and commercial centers and provide safe travel routes for bikers.
