Abstract

Portland's first youth hostel, located at the University of Southern Maine's Portland Hall on Congress Street, hosted more than 500 guests from 11 different countries during the 2 1/2 months it was open. The summer hostel was part of a pilot project aimed at opening a year-round facility in the city within two years. It was administered by the Greater Boston Council/American Youth Hostel.
