Abstract

"City" piece on proposals by Portland city councilors Jack Dawson and Jim Cloutier, who want to clamp down on property owners who fail to fix sewer and safety problems that could endanger their tenants or the public. City Manager Bob Ganley said he's not sure "dropping the hammer on landlords" is the prudent thing to do. Ganley wants city inspectors to be stricter instead. But several councilors support a stronger ordinance. The proposed changes are scheduled to be discussed at the next meeting of the City Council's public safety committee sometime in August.
