Abstract

Some 7,000 couples divorce in Maine each year, with 1,088 divorces filed in Portland alone last year. Hourly rates for divorce lawyers in Greater Portland average around $111, with a range from $50 per hour for the budget Casco Legal Clinic to the $165 per hour for a well-known divorce lawyer. Mainers have a legal right to represent themselves in court, and statewide around 50 percent of divorce cases have at least one party who is doing their own divorce. Mediation, both private and court-mandated, is another option when a couple decides to divorce. Details.
