Abstract

"City" piece on Maine's Sex Offender Registration list. About 3,000 to 4,000 more names are expected to make the list since a state law broadened the definition of sex crimes, according to State Police. And if convicted sex offenders don't register by Sept. 1, they face strict penalties. Originally established in 1992 to report those convicted of gross sexual assault on victims under the age of 16, the registry was expanded in 1999 to include those convicted of 13 additional types of sex crimes. However, only 682 names are currently listed. In 2001, the Legislature made registration retroactive to 1992.
