Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Portland-area yacht clubs and marinas, including Handy Boat, a marina in Falmouth; the Portland Yacht Club, founded in Portland in 1869 but now based in Falmouth; the Centerboard Yacht Club, founded in Portland in 1937 and now based in South Portland; and the Chebeague Yacht Club on Chebeague Island, among others. With special focus on Phineas Sprague, owner of Portland Yacht Services in Portland, who started a sailing program in partnership with the Portland Parks and Recreation Department. In the forefront was Richard Pattenaude, president of the University of Southern Maine, who promoted a sailing team for his school, with an eye to producing some Olympic contenders. About 50 kids when through the course in 2000 and 2001. The most ambitious and popular new program started to date is that of the Portland Sea Scouts under the auspices of the Boy Scouts' Maine Pine Tree Council. With a list of marinas, public facilities and boating and seamanship training programs in the Greater Portland area.
