Abstract

The Portland area has four colleges, with 11,602 students enrolled, but the city lacks the feel of being a college town. One reason could be that only a little over 4,000 of the 9,628 students at the University of Southern Maine are traditional students, or that USM's average undergraduate is a 27-year-old woman. The average student at Southern Maine Technical College is a 26-year-old male, while Maine College of Art's average student is almost 26, either male or female. Details.
