Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece philanthropy in Maine. In 1999, the last year for which numbers are available from the Internal Revenue Service, Mainers who filed itemized tax returns donated $341,289,000 to their favorite churches, charities, social causes, environmental groups, and other nonprofit organizations. Maine ranked 50th in the nation for donations per itemized return. Maine-based foundations added another $36.2 million in donations and grants. With statistics showing Maine donations by Income Group, Average Contribution and National Rank, and Percentage Contributing and National Rank.
