Abstract

More widely revered by Mainers than any other property in the state, Baxter State Park is beginning to suffer from the same sort of crowding that afflicts many national parks. In midsummer, as many as 300 people a day hike the trail up Mount Katahdin. In an effort to save the preserve from overuse and enhance the wilderness experience for which it became famous, Buzz Caverly, the longtime director of the park, has released a bold plan that is stunning in its simplicity. With details about Caverly's plan.
