Abstract

Feature article on the village of East Blue Hill, population 160. As part of Blue Hill, East Blue Hill shares the town's reputation for an intelligent populace with an appreciation for art, music and culture. But East Blue Hill has a rural character that distinguishes it, and residents are reluctant to see the village turn into a tourist attraction. Eighty-seven-year-old native Bea McGraw notes that it's fortunate that change has come slowly to the village, allowing newcomers to absorb traditions. The village's attractiveness has caused property assessments and taxes to rise, and drawn an influx of summer day-trippers.
