Abstract

"The Talk of Bolsters Mills" piece profiling George Stilphen, who has worked for more than a decade to preserve heirloom apple varieties in Maine. Stilphen is the author of "The Apples of Maine," self-published in 1993. The comprehensive guide to old apples shows that 209 varieties that once grew in Maine are of distinctly Maine origin. In addition, Stilphen grows forty-three of those ancient varieties in his orchard on the banks of the Ragged River in Bolsters Mills. Details.
