Abstract

"North by East" piece with a profile of Herbert "Bud" Wood, 75, of South Thomaston, who resigned as SAD 5 transportation director last September. He logged 2.5 million miles driving a school bus, beginning in 1945, and was featured on a Life magazine cover in 1962. He also inspired the children's book "Here Comes the Bus," by Carolyn Haywood. He still puts in 13-hour days and drives several of the "short runs."
