Abstract

"What's in a Picture?" 1930s photograph, by photographer George French , showing a rural homestead in Parsonsfield, with a man carrying water buckets through a snow-covered yard. French, born in 1882, grew up in rural Maine, put himself through Bates College in Lewiston, and later taught school in Massachusetts and even wrote a photography book for the New York Institute of Photography. Much later, from the midthirties to the midfifties, French took photos for the Maine Development Commission, promoting Maine as a tourist destination.
