Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on Southern Maine Technical College in South Portland, which has an estimated $73-million annual impact on the Greater Portland area. The 80-acre, waterfront campus has its own congregate-care facility and eight-room hotel and conference center that are used by students training in those areas. Longtime president Wayne Ross took over in 1979 when the college was a trade school isolated behind a fence in a run-down part of the city. One of his first acts was to open the campus to the community. With details on the college's students, finances, and courses.
