Abstract

"North by East" piece on Maine's 2002 crime statistics. The state has the fastest-growing prison population in the nation, and incidents of rape were up 21.4 percent, but the overall crime rate is 35 percent lower than the rest of the nation, and violent crime has fallen by 16.3 percent since 1984.
