Abstract

An article on Ed Blake, 52, of Union, who carries on a wood-cutting tradition with his sons, Jared and Josh, and his wife, Jean, under the name Ed Blake and Sons Firewood. Despite working 18-hour days, he and his sons are about 250 cords behind in firewood orders in a year of record high heating oil prices. Another factor is the shortage of pulp used by paper companies and people hauling for pulp, an easier task. The Blakes live off the grid, and Jean home schools her sons.
