Abstract

"North by East" piece on the influx of retirees to the state, which has the third-oldest population in the country. About 30 percent of the residents of Damariscotta are 65 or older. The well-respected Miles Memorial Hospital there built one of the first retirement communities in Maine in the early 1990s. Although retirees moving to Maine often have a positive impact on their communities and the local economy, they tend to drive up real estate prices.
