Abstract

New York-based Warren Kremer Paino is designing a 3-year, $9.6-million "It must be Maine" campaign to promote Maine's $9.5-billion tourism industry. The event that galvanized tourist promotion in Maine was the 1893 Columbian Exposition and World's Fair in Chicago, and the Ricker family, who had the State of Maine Building at the fair dismantled and reassembled in Poland Spring. The Rickers also promoted the health benefits of a Maine vacation. In earlier times, Maine was promoted as a natural, healthful and safe alternative to European destinations. With a chronological analysis of how tourists have been drawn to Maine over the years through advertising.
