Abstract
A recap of a surprise upset fight in 1965 at Lewiston's Central Maine Youth Center, where 23-year-old Muhammad Ali knocked out aging heavyweight Sonny Liston less than two minutes into their title rematch. A picture taken of the knockout became famous. At the time, Lewiston's mayor, Robert Couturier, 24, was the youngest mayor in the country. Massachusetts officials cancelled a bout scheduled for Boston Garden because of Liston's suspected ties to the Mob, and the Lewiston venue was hastily arranged. With details on security for the fight, how Lewiston was portrayed by the media, and reminiscences of those who saw the fight.
