Abstract

"North by East" piece on Maine's distinction among the lower 48 states of having no poisonous reptiles or spiders. However, the short-tailed shrew, found in the Maine woods, is one of the only poisonous mammals in the world. There are no records of these shy animals ever injuring a human in the wild.
