Abstract

Forty six percent of Maine households keep a cat--the highest percentage of any state. Although Maine has been successful in stabalizing its dog population, the state has an over-abundance of cats. The perception of animal shelter workers is that Mainers do not place as much value on cats. If a cat is dropped off at a Maine shelter, it can be euthanized or adopted in just 24 hours, compared to six days for dogs.
