Abstract

Unity, population about 2,000, is home to Unity College, which offers more environmental majors than any American college. It is the site of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association's (MOFGA) Common Ground Country Fair and the heart of a larger agrarian community, counting over 50 farms in a ten-mile radius. Bert Clifford, a dairy farmer who struck it rich, built Clifford Common and the Unity Centre for Performing Arts and Field of Dreams and started the Unity Foundation. The civic group, Unity Barn Raisers, has catalyzed an impressive set of achievements, from building a trail system to a community gym.
