Abstract

In 1991, Claire Hunt founded a group to create a large botanical garden that would be rigorously documented to achieve the highest horticultural standard. The Coastal Maine Botanical Garden's visitor center opens this month on a 248-acre shorefront site in Boothbay. The organization has over 1,000 members and 230 volunteers. "The Gardens" is the largest botanical garden in New England and is singular in the East for its focus on seaside flora. Thoughtful design is evident everywhere, and public uses from weddings to solitary contemplation are accommodated. Executive Director Maureen Heffernan expects up to 50,000 visitors annually once the Gardens are complete. With highlights of individual gardens.
