Abstract

Profile of the 30th recipient of the Down East Environmental Award, former governor and U.S senator Edmund Sixtus Muskie (1914-1996), a Rumford native who authored the landmark Clean Air and Clean Water acts and persuaded Congress to pass them. With a look at his political career, his pioneering environmental accomplishments, his bipartisan approach, and speculation on how the nation would have benefited had he won the Democratic primary race and bested Richard Nixon in the presidential race.
