Abstract

Profile of painter William Irving, a native of a seaside town in Scotland. He has won acclaim in his adopted home of Blue Hill, where he has lived since 1969. His oil paintings are at once playful and primal, lush and spare. To achieve his vibrant and rough-edged fields of color, he paints with paper towels, which allows him to build layers of paint without smearing the colors beneath. He says that "all artists are born with a small set of poems," and exploring that mythology is what defines them.
