Abstract

Maine's 95 full-time game wardens are insufficient for their sprawling mission. Maine Game Warden Neal Wykes devotes a significant portion of his time to nuisance-animal calls, though often uneducated callers are the greater nuisance. Hunting and fishing enforcement, search-and-rescue, boating safety, enforcing conservation laws, and oversight of recreational vehicles are all part of the mission. Fourteen wardens have died in the line of duty, the most of any branch of Maine law enforcement. With details on the warden service's history and wardens' training.
