Abstract

Part of a special feature called "Maine After Dark." Profiles of people who work the late shift, including Corporal Lance McCleish of the Maine State Police who patrols the Maine Turnpike's most congested section on a Friday night; Patricia Aylward, a server and supervisor at Dysart's 24/7 truck stop in Hernon; Craig Leech who makes the doughnuts for Congdon's Doughnuts in Wells in a process that is entirely un-automated; and Leland Anderson who, along with Eric Lagerstrom and Michael York, stands watch many nights in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard's self-contained power station. The workers profiled discuss the toll that working a night shift can take, as well as the rewards.
