Abstract

The author writes about her adopted daughter, Ruth, who died from complications due to cerebral palsy when she was eight. She also discusses the work that Kenneth Carr, an engineer in Woolwich, is doing on preventing brain damage in oxygen-deprived newborns by lowering their body temperature. He has developed a tiny antenna that can measure a newborn baby’s brain temperature.
