Abstract

A look at the contentious issue of beachfront public access rights versus property owners’ rights in Maine. Includes an in-depth discussion about the complicated lawsuit – which has been dragging on for over nine years -- over public access to Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport that pits the town and the state against 29 beachfront-property owners. The case is anything but clear-cut, and Maine’s laws regarding coastal property rights are murky at best. Includes a sidebar that defines some legal terms involved in recent beach disputes.
