Abstract

In 1992, Long Island seceded from Portland, becoming Maine's 455th town. Residents cited local control and a return of $365,000 in services for their $755,000 in taxes as major motivating factors. It is now a model for other Casco Bay islands that may want to consider secession. Lengthy and detailed article describes the process and chronology of the secession movement.
