Abstract

Profile of Henry Bryant Bigelow (1879-1967), who in 1912 began a 12-year interdisciplinary survey of the oceanographic resources of the Gulf of Maine. His work made the Gulf of Maine perhaps the best-known body of water its size in the world, and he went on to help establish and direct the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
