Abstract

The last Maine coast steamboat, the Sabino, is now in the Mystic Seaport museum in Connecticut and takes tourists up the Mystic River. Maine island residents depended almost totally on steamboats for mail and transportation until 1942, when trains and automobiles took over. The first route, in 1857, ran from Rockland to Machiasport. Details, historical photos, old shipping mainfests.
