Abstract

Alfred Osgood of Vinalhaven and his boat, the Starlight V, are legends in the Maine herring industry, consistently outperforming every other boat. He uses surface nets, which are replacing herring weirs because of their selectivity and ease of use. Herring has always been abundant in Maine. Details, techniques explained.
