Abstract

George Putzargues that recreational culture is killing island life by demeaning institutions like fishing and boatbuilding. On Vinalhaven, an annual 100 percent property value increase has alienated the island's working classes, and throughout Maine the customs of the fishing community, distasteful to the genteel, have lost out to the summertime-only tourist trade.
