Abstract

Today, fewer than 200 one-room schoolhouses remain in the United States, down from 200,000 in the late 1800s. Six of those one-room schoolhouses are located on Maine islands such as Cliff, Monhegan, Isle au Haut, Islesford, and Matinicus. Maine's modern one-room schoolhouses make use of technology and programs such as the Outer Islands Teaching and Learning Collaborative to allow students to experience the outside world and communicate with students attending school on other islands and coastal communities in Maine. With details about the Cliff Island school and educators.
