Abstract
An in-depth look at the history behind new New England fishing regulations that privatization of fish, called "catch shares", that went into effect on May 1, 2010. The article examines the history that led up to the new regulations, responses to the regulations by fishermen and communities, and the efforts of the Island Institute to support island and coastal fisherman through loans and through purchasing permits.
