Abstract

The Portland Fish Exchange has allowed lobstermen to auction their catch directly, forcing dealers to price competitively. Until the Great Boat Tie-Up of 1989, lobstermen had been at the dealers' mercy, with only four dealers controlling the entire Portland market. The Fish Exchange is predicted to upset some of the traditional relationships between dealers and lobstermen. Details.
