Abstract

"Focus on Health Care" piece on the efforts of Maine hospitals to recruit, train and retain new employees. More than 25,000 full- and part-time employees work in Maine hospitals, making hospitals one of the state's largest employers, and about 6,200 registered nurses make up about 28 percent of the total hospital workforce. Health services employed 59,231 people in 2001, and job growth in the industry is expected to increase 22 percent between 2000 and 2010, compared to average job growth in all industries of eight percent in the same period.
