Abstract

The Rockland-based Farnsworth Museum ended its fiscal year roughly $10,000 in the black after closing for two weeks in the winter to cut operating expenses and make up for lower-than-expected attendance numbers. Donors responded with $200,000, up from typical annual contributions of $150,000. Many Rockland businesses stake their presence in town on the Farnsworth's lure for visitors and its role as an economic driver for the downtown. Many museums are faced with shrinking revenues because of the stock market's decline. Farnsworth director Chris Crosman has been vigilant in protecting the museum's endowment and has not cut staff.
