Abstract

"Focus on Banking and Finance" piece on the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA), which celebrated its 50th anniversary in Bangor recently. SBA backed a record-breaking 480 loans in Maine in fiscal year 2003, with a total value of more than $54 million. Backed by the SBA, banks can extend loans they might otherwise deem too risky. This allows banks to boost their commercial lending businesses, and it levels the playing field for smaller banks. With a list of Maine banks ranked by the number of SBA-backed loans written and a description of different types of SBA-backed loans.
