Abstract

"Focus on Safety and Security" piece on early results from a University of Maine study that show increased costs from new security regulations governing import-export. About a third of businesses shipping goods across the U.S.-Canadian border say they've experienced increased transportation costs and longer delays. Agriculture and food-related companies shipping goods from Canada saw the largest increase, with 57 percent reporting higher costs. Food suppliers have to register with the Food and Drug Administration before shipping goods to this country. Delays at the border have also affected Canadian companies more.
